Taming the Procrastination Beast: My Tips for a Smoother Grad Career Journey
Hey everyone, I wanted to chat about something that I know affects so many of us, especially during uni and when we're trying to land our first proper job: procrastination. You know that feeling, right? Staring at a blank CV template, an assessment centre brief, or a job application, and suddenly cleaning your entire flat seems like a more appealing option. I've been there, and honestly, it can feel like a huge mental block that really messes with your progress. It's not just about getting essays in on time; it can seriously derail your whole job hunt. I remember putting off researching grad schemes, then rushing applications last minute, or delaying interview prep until I felt completely overwhelmed. This obviously didn't lead to my best performance! What I've learned is that it's not a character flaw, but often a habit we pick up, sometimes out of fear (of failure, or even success!), or just feeling swamped. But it's a habit you can absolutely work on. Here are a few things that have really helped me: 1. **Break it Down:** That massive "apply for jobs" task? Too big. Break it into tiny, manageable steps. "Find 3 companies," "write 1 paragraph of my cover letter," "update one section of my CV." Small wins build momentum. 2. **The Two-Minute Rule:** If a task takes less than two minutes, just do it now. Sending that quick email, proofreading a sentence, looking up a company. It adds up and clears your mental to-do list. 3. **Set Realistic Deadlines (and tell someone!):** Not just for external deadlines, but internal ones. "I will finish this section of my application by 5 pm today." Tell a friend or flatmate, so there's a tiny bit of accountability. 4. **Find Your 'Why':** When you're dragging your feet, remind yourself why you're doing this. What's the goal? What will landing that job or smashing that assessment centre mean for you? Connecting to that deeper motivation can be a huge kick-starter. 5. **Reward System:** This sounds silly, but it works! After an hour of focused work, allow yourself 15 minutes of scrolling TikTok, making a cuppa, or watching an episode of something. Positive reinforcement helps your brain associate work with a reward. 6. **Understand Your Triggers:** Do you procrastinate when you're tired? Overwhelmed? Bored? Knowing your triggers helps you prepare. If I'm tired, I know I need to tackle the hardest tasks first thing in the morning. It's a journey, not a destination, and some days you'll be better at it than others. But actively working on these habits can make a massive difference to your mental well-being and, crucially, your career prospects. What are your go-to strategies for beating procrastination when it comes to job applications or work?
